Obsessive searching for vintage mountain bikes and components. Some occasional road bike love too.

Moots layback Post

I've been on a mission to de-carbonify and titaninate my Moots Vamoots. First was a Moots stem. And now a layback post to replace the carbon Campagnolo Record post. Next I am looking into a titanium fork from Black Sheep. Schweet.

Garmin 500

My Garmin 305 has been a great tool, but after a few years of abuse, it has given up the ghost, with buttons broken and the heart rate monitor dead. I had been thinking about going for the whiz-bang color version, but really, I'm not looking at maps. So I was very happy when a Garmin rep told me about the 500. It looks perfect. I look forward to trying it out.

NOS Campagnolo bar con covers

Those bar cons I bought needed new covers. Well here they are.

Moots Ti 100mm stem

I had been looking for a Ti stem for my Moots Vamoots. This one is perfect.

Campagnolo friction bar cons

These are the "Charlie-approved" shifters for a drop bar Cunningham. I was happy to pick up an extra set.

Michelin Hi-Lite Tour 27 1 3/8

My Cunningham Expedition uses a 27 inch front wheel and a 700c rear wheel. Fortunately, Panaracer makes a nice 27 inch tire, but I was still happy to find these period correct Hi-Lites to replace the crusty ones which are currently on the bike.

Sedis Traveller Chain

A new Suntour chain just went for around $115, which seems high to me. Back in the day, I was always a Sedis man and so was very happy to pick this one up. Indeed, the model is better than the one I used to favor.

Smart Tools Angle Finder

Curious to find out the geo on my bikes, I picked up this neat tool.

1983 Stumpjumper

New seat, grips and tires, but other wise original and clean. The production bike that brought mountain biking to the masses.

Early Steve Potts CCR

The dude that sold this bike to the ebay seller called the bike a WTB Racer. Maybe he mistook the name, but I am not so sure. This bike, built by Steve Potts, has a number of details that differentiate it from later CCRs (cross country racers). The cable guides are very different and the fork is fillet brazed, not TIG welded. The bike has just enough patina to keep it real too. Oh yea, dibs on stems etc was a fantastic bonus.

Wolber tubulars (for mountain bikes!)

I am given to understand that the kids are starting to use something like these again. I suppose that means that Wolber was ahead of its time. I have wanted some Wolber products for my collection (hoard) so happy to find this unusual item. I wonder why so many people want to call the company Wobler.

Newsboy Hat

I have a Newsboy (from the original run of 100) so why not get the hat too?!

More Breezer goodies - bars and front derailleur!

Slowly, slowly, the pieces are coming together. I found a vintage Magura bar that should do the trick and a NIB (new in box) Suntour VX front derailleur. The frame will be re-nickel plated and I have some parts at the plater for a test run.

Breezer parts day - Phil Wood and Suntour content

Picked up a couple items that I need for my Breezer Series II build. Outstanding parts are dwindling. Today picked up the No. 4 Phil Wood bottom bracket and a Suntour Cyclone GT rear derailleur.

Thomson R2 Stem

I am looking for a little less rise on my Moots Vamoots (and wanted to stop with the mountainbike stem)

Specialized Stumpjumper tires

A little age-worn, but will be perfect for one of my older bikes - either an 82 Ritchey Mountain Bikes Everest or a Breezer Series II.

PowerTap

So I need to get in shape and I barely train. Why not train more efficiently then. At least that is the plan. Perfect for implementation is this mountain bike PowerTap wheel. Indoor trainer, here I come!

Shimano 600 rear derailleur

A little nicer than the 105 derailleur and suitable for older builds, this early index 600 rear derailleur was *the* choice for tricked out race builds.

Shimano 105 rear derailleur

Popular for late-80s Ibis mountain bikes and always a classy fix for pre-XTR builds. This one was not quite in the condition described as it was missing the upper bushing, but no biggie. It is in solidly, rider shape.

Dia Compe SS-7 levers

Just when I had settled on the levers for Cunningham Racer #24C, up pops these even nicer levers. First came the bare bones ADV5, then the SS-5 and then the SS-7. The 'Ham will get SS-7 levers with their nice feel, good looks and low weight.

Dia Compe SS-5 levers

My 1988 Cunningham Racer is almost ready. The frame has had a factory-refresh, the fork and stem are scheduled to return from re-Imroning by Joe Bell and the parts kit has been assembled. When I got the bike it came with XT two-finger levers which work well but are kind of heavy and certainly not too cool. I picked up this pair of Dia Compe SS-5 levers as a fix. Looks to be some wear but nothing to bad. I can't wait to get the bike together.

1990 Steve Potts Cross Country Racer

Hey! Just got that "Congratulations you Won!" email and was thinking, "what did I bid on?" and then remembered the bid I through out on a kinda beat Potts CCR. Great all around bike with beautiful detailing. Nice too that I have an extra Type II built by Steve somewhere in my pile.

Wilderness Trail Bikes modified Hi-E hubs

One of the earliest offerings from Wilderness Trail Bikes was this hubset which is largely a rebranded version of Charlie Cunningham's modified Hi-E's. I have a set on a Swift (Steve Potts/ Mark Slate collaboration) but was happy to find this set with decals.

Suntour BMX XC pedals

A later favorite of riders and builders was the Suntour XC Compe pedal. Before the XC Compe was this Suntour BMX pedal. It looks like the Compe but with a matte black axle and silver cages. These will probably go on the Breezer.

Duopar Eco rear derailleur

This was the choice of many early mountain bike builders. It was famously fragile and from my initial inspection, doesn't appear to have great action. Still, it is the right part for a restoration. This is slated for my 1982 Ritchey Mountainbikes Everest.

XTR M900 1.125 Headset

Have - first generation Merlin Newsboy and last generation Ibis Type II fork. Just needed the "glue" to bind them. Enter this elegant M900 headset. Still the best looking XTR. It was cheap because of the less typical size. Heck, I've seen STX headsets go for four times the price and that ain't no joke.

Specialized HX-22 wheelset

Specialized sealed bearing hubs are so great. So smooth, so beautifully finished. The Saturae HX-22 rims are great too. Not complete sure what I will do with this wheelset which is probably from 1985 or 86 but it will find a good home.

Vintage Ideale Titanium Saddle

Very neat, though a little scary, vintage saddle. Apparently it was one of the first titanium railed saddles. The shell has a nice hammock-like give too. I am using it on my early Cunningham restoration that is moments from completion.

Brooks B-72

A nice piece for the Breezer restoration project. Yea, I know that this saddle has been made continuously, but it was nice to find a good condition correct vintage version.

Dura Ace 7 speed chain 7400

Kind of nice to have extra chains for restoration projects. The Dura Ace chain was a nice detail of high-end mountain bikes in the mid-80s. This was an expensive chain too - $70 nearly 20 years ago.

Campagnolo Seat Quick Release

So, I picked up Breezer - a "The Breezer." For those who don't know, Joe Breeze is broadly credited with building the first purpose-built mountain bike - The Breezer. He made a very limited run (less than 10) of Series I frames. Between 1980 and 1981 he built 25 Series II frames and of these two were 18 inch, i.e. my size. Amazingly I found one of these close to home in NYC! The original nickel-plating has been refinished with lush gold paint. I am waivering between doing a full blown restore of the frame right away, or limiting myself to collecting the parts while I work on getting the best images for reproducing the decals/stencils.

Anyhoo, part one, I thought, was this Campagnolo seat qr. Problem is the diameter is too big. Eventually I'll figure out a solution.

Shimano 600 14-34 six speed freewheel

Another piece for the LPB restoration. The correct freewheel is a Suntour New Winner with custom spacing and cut teeth. That said...

Garmin mounts

Man, I was getting so fed up with moving my Garmin mount from bike to bike. So I finally did something about it and picked up a few extra mount kits.

Dave's Speed Dream Hi-E wheelset

Pretty neat wheelset with funky details all around. Hi-E hubs, modified (note the freewheel threading on both sides of the rear if you can make it out), cool spoke pattern. Not for me though. These were trade bait for an Ibis-modified set that are are ringer for Cunningham modded Hi-E's. These (non-pictured) wheels will go on the Little Peoples Bike restoration I am working on.

Specialized Turbo-S Tires

Always percolating on the backburner is a plan to build up a C Record equipped road bike, heck probably the the Weigle. I have a nice wheelset with Ambrosia rims and semi-bladed forks and an alloy Campagnolo freewheel. One part needed to move this very sluggish project forward are these, nice minty skinwall clinchers.

J.P. Weigle road bike

Ooh la la - I can't believe it. I have an auto search for J.P. Weigle on the off chance that one of his bikes showed up in my size. Weigle is arguably the top frame builder in America and he no longer builds road bikes. Today I was so pleasantly surprised to see one of his bikes come up in my size. I can't wait to build this up.

XC Pro pedals and Fisher toe clips

These are my fave Suntour pedals and a nice bonus is that they come with the Cunningham knock-off/inspired Fisher double toe clips.

Cook Bros titanium bar

Decently long, cool bar. It came from a Cunningham and may well go back on another.

Mountain Goat "bullmoose"

When I picked up a gimped-out 1985 Mountain Goat Deluxe I didn't have high hopes on finding the correct bar/stem combo, especially after I found out that Bikeman had sold the one it had. And then this appeared...

Suntour ARX rear derailleur

I am doing a light restore of an older fillet brazed Steve Potts mountain bike. Luckily, the bike came with the original build sheet so I knew that the main missing items were a Suntour ARX rear derailleur and some modified Magura grips. Done and done.
